Bridget English, Ph.D., will consider how Samuel Beckett’s short story A Case in a Thousand employs the framework of medical observation to address the psychological repercussions of treatment and to raise ethical questions surrounding care. In this and other works, Beckett points to the limits of medical knowledge and psychoanalysis, casting doubt on the capacity of the narrative to adequately express suffering or convey empathy. Dr. English is a senior lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
