Professor Delia Popescu to Serve on MULTIPAST Project, Guest of IWM

Professor Delia Popescu, chair of the Political Science Department, has been invited to serve on the scientific committee of MULTIPAST – Transitional Justice for Multiple Pasts, a five-year research project recently awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant and hosted by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania.

The ERC Advanced Grant is one of the most competitive research awards in Europe: this year only 319 of 3,329 proposals were funded. It is led by Professor Lavinia Stan, a leading Canadian scholar of transitional justice, and centers on a comparison of eight post-dictatorial and post-conflict societies across four world regions. The project breaks new ground by asking what happens when a post-dictatorial or post-conflict society must confront not one but several difficult pasts that demand recognition and repair simultaneously. Through a comparative study of eight cases across four world regions (Romania, Croatia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Vietnam, Tunisia, and Kenya) MULTIPAST is the first project to examine this problem systematically, with direct implications for public policy, democratization and human rights.

Popescu has also been selected as a guest of the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, to work on her book project, “Archives and Ergoglossia: Gender and Romani Labor in Securitate Files.” The IWM is among the most distinguished institutes for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences in Europe and each year it draws roughly a hundred scholars, writers and public intellectuals to Vienna, chosen purely on the merit of their work.

“IWM has been a gathering place for serious thinking across the old East–West divide since long before such conversations were easy to have,” said Popescu. “To be welcomed into that setting is among the more meaningful recognitions a scholar in my area can receive.”

“Professor Popescu has long been recognized as an expert in comparative political theory and both these invitations reflect how highly-regarded she is with her international peers,” said Le 91��Ƭ��վ President Linda LeMura. “We are thrilled that she will be making significant contributions on a global scale.”

Popescu is also currently completing two edited volumes: You Say You Want a Revolution? Lessons from East Central Europe in 1989 (Bloomsbury, 2026), and The Afterlife of Dissent: Havel’s “Power of the Powerless” in Contemporary Perspective (forthcoming, 2027).

Le 91��Ƭ��վ Interns Make an Impact at Mission Critical Group

For the second year in a row, Texas-based Mission Critical Group (MCG) hired multiple Le 91��Ƭ��վ students for summer internships. Working in human resource and finance, the three students – Madyson Simmons, Diego Martinez and Katie Kees – were involved in a number of initiatives during the summer and presented to senior leadership about projects they were charged with during their internship experience.

Madyson Simmons ‘27, a human resources major, worked on how to improve MCG’s talent interviewing process, determining that the secret to successful people at MCG is alignment with the company’s culture as much as the role they are being hired for. She gave recommendations on ways to improve the interviewing process to help ensure a cultural match. Madyson was offered for a full-time role at MCG and will join the company in December.

Katie Kees ‘27, also a human resources major, worked on ways to launch benefits to a recent acquisition transitioning to the MCG. After studying MCG’s insurance, health care options, retirement savings programs and other benefits, she gave presentations to 300 newly acquired employees during their open enrollment, a task typically done by HR specialists with at least five years of experience. The company is working with Katie to find a full-time role in an area of the country that would work best for her.

Diego Martinez de los Reyes ‘27, a finance major, worked on building a competitive comparison analytical model, taking a public company comparison group and developing a framework that can be updated each quarter to compare MCG and the public companies financial and operational dimensions. His work involved building a model that not only compared numbers but also factored in where strategy and intention drive the differences. He is undecided on next steps but is leaning toward going to graduate school.

“In sitting in the presentations and watching the reactions of our team who have no connection to Le 91��Ƭ��վ, these great young adults made me and should make everyone at the College proud,” said Chris Curtis ’79, MCG executive chairman who recently served as chair of Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s Board of Trustees. “All three of these students nailed their presentations with poise, confidence and were very well spoken.”

Curtis noted that the students gave great feedback on how the internship program at MCG could be improved. Le 91��Ƭ��վ has been allocated four of the expected 40 interns the company plans on hiring next summer.

“Chris and his team created a best-in-class internship experience and the chance for them to earn their first full-time job out of college” said Meredith Tornabene, Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s director of career advising and development. “These internships truly can change the trajectory of a student’s life and Chris made that possible. Le 91��Ƭ��վ Named One of the Nation’s Best 392 Colleges by The Princeton Review

For the 14th consecutive year, Le 91��Ƭ��վ College has been ranked by The Princeton Review as being one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to , the 2027 college guidebook that was released today.

Colleges are selected for the book based on data it annually collects from surveys of 2,000 administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings. The company also reviews data from its surveys of 172,000 college students attending the schools who report on their experiences at their institutions. The Princeton Review college rankings is now in its 35th year.

“The colleges that make our ranking lists in the book do so entirely as a result of their own students’ opinions of them,” said Robert Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review. “They are truly a select group: they comprise only about 14% of America’s nearly 2,800 four-year colleges. The colleges we profile in The Best 392 Colleges vary by type, size, locale and campus culture. In our opinion, each one offers an academically outstanding undergraduate education.”

The Princeton Review is an education services company known for its tutoring, test-prep, admission services, books, and other learning resources. Headquartered in New York City, it is not affiliated with Princeton University.

Physician Assistant Studies Program Director Patrick Nappi Awarded NYSPPA Educator of the Year

The New York State Society of PAs (NYSSPA) has presented Patrick Nappi ’12, G’16, DMSc, M.S., PA-C, with the Paul Lombardo, MPS, PA-C Emeritus, Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Nappi, director of Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s Physician Assistant Studies Program, will be presented the award at the NYSPPA CME conference Oct. 16 to 18 in Albany.

“I’m honored to receive this recognition from NYSPPA,” said Dr. Nappi. “Though it is an individual award, it is a direct reflection of the rigor and high quality of Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s PA Program.”

“First as a faculty member and now as director, Patrick has been an integral part of the PA program for the past seven years,” said Purcell School of Professional Studies Dean Meega Wells, Ph.D, R.N., APN-BC. “This recognition is well deserved and speaks to the strength of the program in graduating competent and compassionate physician assistants.”

A Syracuse native, Dr. Nappi earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Le 91��Ƭ��վ College. He completed his Doctor of Health Sciences degree at A.T. Still University in 2021. Since joining Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s Physician Assistant Program faculty in 2019, Dr. Nappi has been dedicated to educating future physician assistants. He served as associate dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies from 2023 to 2025 and has served as director since 2025.

Nappi was among those recognized by . “These awards provide an opportunity to highlight the incredible professionals that are making a real difference in healthcare across the state. This year’s class is exemplary of the versatility provided by PA professionals and reinforces why New York State can always use more of them. Lynne Parker Davis ’78 to be Honored with the College’s Highest Honor at 2026 Founders’ Day Gala

Real estate technology entrepreneur, author and philanthropist Lynne Parker Davis ’78, will be honored at Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s annual Founders’ Day Gala on Friday, Oct. 16 at Marriott Syracuse Downtown. At the event, Davis will be presented with the Simon Le 91��Ƭ��վ S.J. Medal, the College’s highest honor, which is given to individuals who embody Jesuit values and demonstrate exceptional leadership, service and dedication to society.

Davis is the founder of NterNow, an on-demand, self-service access platform for prospective home buyers to tour locked new homes. Founded in 2005 to address consumer demand for self-service home touring, Davis grew the patented smart-lock technology company into a national brand serving home builders across nearly 46 states and Canada before its acquisition in 2025 by The Schlage Lock Company, an Allegion brand.

A trailblazer throughout her career, Davis spent 17 years in corporate marketing and sales with major entertainment and cable brands, including HBO, The Disney Channel, Cox Enterprises, and NewChannels Corp. winning a prestigious Cable TV Association of Marketers award. In real estate, her industry achievements earned her the Atlanta Real Estate Board’s Phoenix Award, a nomination as one of RISMedia’s Top 15 Innovative Agents in the U.S., and honors for NterNow including the National Association of Home Builders S.A.F.E. Innovation of the Year Award.

Beyond her corporate success, Davis has remained deeply committed to service and creative pursuits. She has volunteered for over 30 years as a children and adult religious educator and ministry leader at The Catholic Church of Saint Ann, and is currently finishing the second book in her dystopian Catholic fiction trilogy, Survival and the Sacred.

In May 2026, she made a transformative $1 million gift to Le 91��Ƭ��վ to establish the Alma Ilacqua, Ph.D. Writing Center (“The Alma”) and create a prestigious faculty fellowship in English and communications. Honoring her former professor, Dr. Alma Aquilino Ilacqua, the endowment also provides crucial operating support benefiting the English Department, the Madden College of Business and Economics, and the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity. Additionally, Davis’s philanthropy includes funding to support students transitioning to Le 91��Ƭ��վ from Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School through the Moriarty-Pullano Pathway.

“Lynne’s journey as an innovator, community leader, and visionary perfectly reflects our mission to educate men and women for and with others,” said President Linda LeMura. “Her lifelong dedication to service and honoring those who inspired her, makes her an exceptional recipient of the Simon Le 91��Ƭ��վ Medal.”

A Good Neighbor – A Great Leader

For Linda LeMura, creating a sense of community is a guiding principle that has helped define her personal and professional life. She finds that community through her faith, her family, her profession and in working with other leaders and colleagues beyond the Le 91��Ƭ��վ campus.

Her 12-year tenure, which recently eclipsed that of William Reilly, S.J., as the longest-serving president in the history of Le 91��Ƭ��վ College, has been defined by steady leadership, remarkable success in a number of key areas, strategic collaborations and facing significant challenges head-on. Through it all, colleagues and friends say LeMura has never lost touch with her humble upbringing, her deep connection to the Central New York region and her fervent belief that students are at the epicenter of Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s Jesuit mission.

Linda is one of those rare leaders who combines intellectual rigor with deep emotional intelligence. She’s a serious scholar – and yet she leads with her heart as much as her head. She has enormous energy and an infectious enthusiasm that draws people to her and to Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s mission. But I think what sets her apart most is her genuine commitment to people. She doesn’t just talk about cura personalis – she lives it.”

“The attributes she possesses that make her such a successful, productive and, may I add loved, president are that she is positive, enthusiastic, smart, kind, compassionate and dedicated,” said Lucy Paris, who has been a personal friend for more than 30 years. “She is faithful to God, her family, friends, co-workers, students and to the world in general.”

These traits have been the hallmark of LeMura’s career and were evident long before she became Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s 14th president. She began her professional life as a professor of physiology and a prolific scholar publishing research in the field of pediatrics and obesity. In 2003, she joined Le 91��Ƭ��վ as dean of arts and sciences. Promoted in 2008 to provost and vice president for academic affairs, LeMura made history in 2014 when she became the first lay woman to become president of a Jesuit institution in the United States.

“We could see her passion and intelligence, and her love for the students,” said Sharon Kinsman Salmon ’78, who served as the chair of the board of trustees for that history-making promotion. “She admired and respected the faculty. She had developed several articulation and partnership agreements with other schools, and she was extremely knowledgeable about the challenges facing higher education.”

Her appointment started a trend that has literally changed the face of Jesuit education in the U.S., as 12 other institutions have since named female presidents, and earlier this year the Association for Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) named its first female president.

I am proud that I have helped pave the way for others. However, being a president has challenges and responsibilities no matter what gender you are.”

“Linda rarely, if ever, spoke of the pressures associated with being the first lay woman to lead a Jesuit college,” said Joe McShane, S.J., a Le 91��Ƭ��վ professor from 1982 to 1992 who went on to serve for five years as president of the University of Scranton before leading Fordham University from 2003 to 2022. “A practical visionary, she let her actions and plans speak for her. As a result, she quickly became a trusted (and revered) presence at the AJCU board table.”

Outside of the Jesuit network, her work in the Syracuse community illustrates her belief in the value of collaboration and partnerships. Ben Walsh, who served as mayor of Syracuse from 2018 to 2025, viewed LeMura as one of his key allies and confidante while he was in office.

“Having grown up in Syracuse and seeing neighborhoods go through tough times, as dedicated as she is to mission of Le 91��Ƭ��վ, she is equally passionate about getting the city back on solid footing,” said Walsh who, like LeMura, is a Syracuse native. “She recognized early on how we could best use the assets and economic influence of Le 91��Ƭ��վ to benefit the city as a whole and in particular the Salt Springs neighborhood that surrounds campus. She was always looking for opportunities to collaborate and recognizes that the College has a bigger role to play beyond the campus borders in terms of supporting the community.”

“Her commitment to the community flows naturally from who Linda is,” said Barlok. “She is a daughter of Syracuse – a first-generation college graduate, the child of Italian immigrants who arrived in the U.S. with no English and a pile of dreams. She has said it herself: ‘I am that kid’ – meaning she is the very student that Le 91��Ƭ��վ was founded to serve. For her, Le 91��Ƭ��վ’s relationship with Syracuse isn’t an institutional strategy. It is very personal – almost sacred … She sees the College and the community as inseparable.”

“She grew up here,” said Kinsman Salmon. “Integrating Le 91��Ƭ��վ with the whole community is positive for everyone involved. Inclusivity is in her nature.”

Prior to its closing in 2024, LeMura’s friend Paris worked in development for the Cathedral Academy at Pompei (CAP), a K to 6 school in Syracuse that is the president’s alma mater.

“Her involvement, integration and partnerships with the community, including CAP, is two-fold,” Paris reflected. “One is her passionate connections. She wants the best for what she holds dear. The other is looking for how best she can help foster and grow the community she lives in and loves. She is always looking to partnerships that realize the benefits of sharing resources, intelligence and ideas for the betterment of all.”

“Her question to me is always, ‘How can Le 91��Ƭ��վ help serve the diocese better,’” said Syracuse Bishop Douglas Lucia. “Through the work of Bishop Foery, the Syracuse Diocese was the catalyst for the founding of the College. The connection between the diocese and the College was there from the beginning.”

One development that promises to change the community is the pending arrival of Micron Technology’s semiconductor “megafab” facility, which broke ground in January 2026. Current plans call for a $100 billion investment over 20 years, with the first phase opening between 2030 and 2033. It is expected to create thousands of jobs.

LeMura has been a huge proponent of the project, recognizing how significantly it will transform the economic ecosystem of the entire region and all of upstate New York.

“In September of 2022, when most of you started high school, the Micron project hadn’t even been formally announced,” she said at a recent accepted student day event. “At that point it was an unknown – a possibility – a rumor. Yet here we are, four years later, and it is a distinct, concrete career option. I know that’s the case because we’re working closely with community leaders and Micron’s executives to ensure that this College and our students have a seat at the table for this historic opportunity. In fact, we’ve already had one student get an internship and then a full-time job with Micron, and they just broke ground a few weeks ago! That student was sitting in your seat not too long ago. And that student is now succeeding in a career he never expected. That’s what Le 91��Ƭ��վ has always done, and that’s what Le 91��Ƭ��վ will do for you.”

This exemplifies how LeMura views her role as president of the youngest of the 27 Jesuit institutions in the U.S. – with a mixture of enthusiasm, optimism and pragmatism, but always keeping the future of Le 91��Ƭ��վ and its students (and future alumni) at the forefront.

“In the course of the many conversations that we had during my summer visits to the Heights, I was struck by the fact that she was always restless, always looking for ways both to improve the College and to raise its regional and national profile,” said Father McShane. “I was also struck by the fact that she had the energy to take on the challenges connected with what she wanted for Le 91��Ƭ��վ. At the end of my visits, I was both energized and a bit exhausted.”

“She possesses a unique combination of positive attributes – exceptional intelligence, energy, passion and determination,” said Walsh. “Change is hard and when she sets her mind to something she will not lose focus until it’s done. That’s rare. A lot of people will start a project, but to have the energy and persistence to see it through makes her unique as a leader.”

Her skills and passion for leading others have positively impacted generations of students. Well into her second decade as president, she shows no signs of slowing down.

Higher education needs more leaders who can walk into a room, connect with a 19-year-old student and a 75-year-old donor with equal ease, crack a joke that lands perfectly, and then turn around and make a compelling case for why the institution deserves your support and your loyalty. Linda does all of that, and she makes it look effortless.”
